The Grape Escape - Montepulciano

The rolling hills of Montepulciano, southern Tuscany's wine powerhouse, have been cultivated for nearly 3000 years. A tour of this winery's ecologically friendly vineyards, harvesting facilities and cellars culminates in a tasting of 5 wines accompanied by a variety of traditional starters, local produce, perfectly cooked pasta and a traditional Tuscan dessert. The winery reveals how its environmentally green process—from the grape to the table—gives each wine an unadulterated depth of richness, aroma and taste.

  • Meet your sommelier guide on the winery's panoramic terrace for an overview of Montepulciano's wine making history, and this winery's dedication to producing top rated wines though ecologically sound and environmentally sustainable means.
  • The guide begins an amazing tour of the winery by pointing out a series of protected openings on the terrace floor that allow natural sunlight to pour into the extensive wine making facilities below. The sun's rays augmented by solar bulbs and panels power the entire estate.
  • The tour moves below ground. Learn how the openings in the terrace above result in grapes being lowered by hand into vats. Your guide explains how gravity techniques and natural oxygenation are employed versus the pressure and mechanical methods used by many other producers. Guests leave the winery with a greater appreciation of how these gentle methods prevent bruising the grape's skin and result in maximum flavor.
  • Next, on to the barreling area to view the ingenious devices that eliminate the formation of sediments.
  • A visit to the vineyards reveals how honey bees are safely kept and seasonally released to naturally pollinate the rows of mostly San Giovese vines. The bees also make excellent honey.
  • By now, the pasta seasoned with a fresh tomato sauce is ready to be served on the picturesque terrace overlooking the vines. Along with pasta, a wide range of antipasti, garden greens and homemade pie form the base on which the sommelier conducts a tasting of 1 rosé and 4 estate red wines, with each glass growing in intensity: Montepulciano Rosé, Montepulciano Red DOC, Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG, Riserva di Montepulciano DOCG and topped off by a super aged, multiple award winning vintage.
  • Following a leisurely, delicious and informative wine lunch, participants are welcome to browse the treasures of the tasting room and select wines and honey for purchase on the spot or for insured shipment back home.
  • For those who prefer to avoid stairs, the winery has an elevator allowing access to all parts of the cellar.
